Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stabilize a broken leg in a newborn?

Watch the YouTube video on fracture repair.

How do I know if a calf is too big to deliver vaginally?

If the head and both forelegs are unable to enter the pelvis at the same time it is too big.  (Watch the basic program, (it’s FREE).

When resuscitating newborn calves should I hang them upside down to remove amnionic fluid?

No.  Just sit them up with the head down and stimulate respiration by rubbing the chest, placing something (i.e. a finger or straw) up the nose or blowing up the nose to increase CO2.

Which twin do I deliver first if one is coming breach and the other normal?

Deliver the one coming normally first so the breach calf can be delivered more rapidly through the already dilated birth canal and prevent aspiration. (Watch the basic program).

What is a flail chest?

If a calf that is marginally too big is delivered vaginally the junction of the ribs and the sternum will be fractured preventing the calf from being able to inhale properly.
